Microsoft is planning to add colors to Window 11’s Task Manager that will make it easier to understand actually what it’s showing. Microsoft developers revealed the tool during a Windows Insider Webcast broadcasted in April (YouTube Link). It will work by utilizing the accent colors you pick for Windows 11 in the Personalisation section of Settings. Whichever color you select, Windows will continue to show light shades for less-intensive tasks and darker ones for heavier processes. In the image, the color Blue has been chosen.
The developers in the video stated that colors are being added because users are getting bored with the default yellow “mustard” color. They also shed some light on Microsoft’s new ‘Efficiency Mode‘ in Task Manager, allowing users to put limits on how much power specific tools can use.
They added that the Task Manager demonstrated in the webcast isn’t ready to be tested by Insiders and that it’s far from being the finalized version that will ultimately be part of Windows 11. However, the latest Insider Preview version of Task Manager does add new keyboard shortcuts: press Alt+N to execute a new task; press Alt+E to terminate the selected process, and press Alt+V to turn Efficiency Mode on and off for the desired process.
